The Rottingdean Whiteway Centre was the scene of revelations behind the greatest artists in the last 500 years. 70 local art and heritage fans filled the room to hear and see how an internationally recognised Sussex based expert in art restoration, validation and curation applied his skills.
Local Heritage and Arts organisers welcomed David Bomford, past conservator and curator of at the National Gallery. David has held senior roles at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Oxford University, British Museum and currently a Trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum. David shared multiple examples on how Old Master paintings are restored and authenticated using X-ray, ultraviolet, chemical analysis and human expertise in visual acuity and synthesis.
Examples reviewed included Rembrandt, Raphael, Van Dyk, and many others. Audience questions included valuations on a lost Da Vinci, Old Master paint and brush techniques, and the future impact of Ai on art. Local attendee Clive Bonny a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts says “Brighton and Hove has a substantial heritage and arts reputation and Rottingdean itself has a history going back 5000 years to neolithic times. Unique events like this deserve a wide audience to attract and educate our international students and tourists.”
